Our mission The Chin community has been growing in number in Indianapolis since 2000 due to fleeing from the military dictatorship of our mother country, Burma (Myanmar). Having been relocated to a new place and environment, we face many challenges that make us willingly help each other to meet our basic social and human needs. The social condition of the Chin community necessitated the emergence of a community organization to serve its members’ day to day survival.

Ways to help

Rides

Taking someone who does not drive to the grocery store or pharmacy-there are many older Chin people who do not drive. Taking someone to a store or to run an errand, especially during inclement weather, is a great need. And while you are there, take the time to practice those basic English words and phrases!

Practicing English

Many people in the Chin community are in the need of individual practice speaking, writing, and reading English. You don’t need a teaching background, only patience. One on one practice with basic words and phrases is a highly effective way to learn the English language. Many of the people are already taking our English class and would benefit from practicing those skills which they have already been taught.

Homework Assistance

Helping a child with homework; often times there is a language barrier within Chin homes. The children know English, but their parents do not. Helping a child with his or her homework is a great need in the Chin community. Offering one on one help for the child, and the parent, is a great way to bridge the gap.

How you help Volunteering at Chin Center does not take any special skills or experience, just the desire to joyfully offer your time, talent, or service to someone in our community. The Chin Center offers a wide variety of volunteer opportunities which do not require you to know or speak the Chin language.
About us With such a conviction and in order to serve the Chin community, providing means to integrate into the local social structure, the Chin in Indiana established the Chin Community of Indiana (CCI) on July 20, 2001. Our community population has grown to nearly 20,000 people in 2020.
