Ways to help |
Readying Readers for LifeWe count on the steady support and encouragement of dedicated tutors to help students reach their reading, education and career goals. In our Community Classrooms, tutors work with students individually or in small groups on a variety of activities to increase skills and knowledge. Using a student-centered curriculum, volunteers guide students in learning English or in mastering the mechanics of reading to help them reach personal levels of success.A Book Lover's ParadiseAll proceeds from our book store support our vision to make Indianapolis 100% literate! You can help us in this mission by donating gently used books or your time. Our book-loving volunteers help customers, sort donations, restock shelves, and help spread the word about the cause of Adult Literacy. |

How you help | When you teach someone to read, you change their life. The ability to read and write gives one access to information, independence, communication, and so much more. Join Indy Reads as a volunteer and help us change lives. |

About us | To understand the importance of what Indy Reads does, you only need to think about what you are doing right now. You are reading. You are taking in information across time and space that is represented only by marks on a page. It is a process so automatic for most of us, that we rarely think about its power. Over 49,000 adults in Marion County, however, do not have that power. They cannot read well enough to complete a job application, understand a newspaper, take in the meaning of road signs, or comprehend written instructions. Our vision is a future in which adults have the literacy, English, and digital skills they need to help build stronger families, workplaces, and communities. |
