School on Wheels
Ways to help | Become a TutorOur volunteer tutors provide focused support to school-aged children experiencing homelessness in schools and shelters throughout Indianapolis. Daytime and evening opportunities available with multiple locations. All backgrounds and education levels encouraged. We provide the training! One hour a week can change a child's life. We are now accepting volunteer tutor applications for the Fall 2021 semester. At this time we feel confident that many of our in-person sessions will resume as normal and other placements may be virtual. Please understand that there will likely be a delay to training and tutor placements as School on Wheels and our partners navigate changing schedules and COVID precautions. |

How you help | If you're looking to have amazing impact on some of the most vulnerable children in our city, we have plenty of fun ways for you to get involved as a volunteer. You can help at our sites, in our office or on some special projects! Over the past 19 years, School on Wheels has trained nearly 5,970 community volunteers as tutors to help our staff provide 98,140 tutoring & academic support sessions to 6,486 children impacted by homelessness. Without intervention, students impacted by homelessness are eight to nine times more likely to repeat a grade, but School on Wheels students who attend tutoring for the duration of the school year have a grade promotion rate of 98%! Our students are successful because we work with the teachers and parents of the students enrolled in our programs to develop personal learning plans and set educational goals to help parents become the best advocates for their child’s education. |

About us | Founded in 2001, School on Wheels is dedicated to providing tutoring and academic support services to school-aged children impacted by homelessness. We bring services to schools, shelters, and transitional living facilities across Indianapolis serving children in grades K-12. Our programs help hundreds of students each year have the academic and emotional support they need to maintain and improve their grades, focus on critical skill building, achieve grade promotion, and build a strong academic foundation despite the trauma and instability of homelessness. |
